On 14 March 2023, the Commonwealth Government announced the optimal pathway for the acquisition of a conventionally armed Nuclear Powered Submarine (NPS) capability for Australia, part of which involves Australia building NPS in South Australia. ANI will develop the NPS construction yard at Osborne, with enabling works commencing on schedule in late 2023.

This is a very significant undertaking for ANI, as the infrastructure will be extensive and technically complex, and the construction is expected to span more than a decade.

ANI will work closely with the Australian Submarine Agency, Defence, the Government-selected shipbuilder, various regulatory bodies and other stakeholders including AUKUS partners to ensure that the Osborne infrastructure design and construction is progressed in accordance with the required schedules, is fit for its intended purpose and meets or exceeds the highest standards of nuclear safety and security.
